About Ford Explorer Sport Trac

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac, also called Ford Sport Trac, as a mid-size pickup truck, was produced by the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company from 2000 to 2010. You may feel familiar with this name Ford Explorer, a brilliant SUV, while Ford Explorer Sport Trac offers the best of both words of pickup and SUV. It slots between the Ranger and Ford F-Series in Ford's truck lineup, based on capability and price. After being manufactured for two generations to compete with other mid-size trucks and SUVs, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac ended production in October 2010 eventually.
The first-generation Ford Explorer Sport Trac (2001-2005) was built based on the second-generation Explorer and was released in February 2000 as a 2001 model. XLS and XLT were available trim levels. Back then, Ford Sport Trac only got one 4.0 L Cologne V6 engine rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque and this engine was paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission. Then the second-generation Ford Sport Trac (2006-2010) built based on fourth-generation Explorer was introduced in 2006 as a 2007 model. It featured an all-new reinforced frame and four-wheel independent suspension and was offered in mid-class XLT and high-luxury Limited trim levels as well as a Sport Trac Adrenalin SVT version. Meanwhile, the Sport Trac also added a new 4.6 L V8 engine producing 292 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and a new 6-speed automatic transmission.

Ford Explorer Sport Trac Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Possessing advantages of the cargo-hauling ability of a pickup and the comfortable interior of an SUV, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac is pretty impressive. But an undeniable fact is that as time goes by, problems will find it in the end:
First, engine failure. In fact, this issue is not strange to anyone who has a vehicle and it is what they definitely happens at the end. Some Ford Explorer Sport Trac drivers said before the engine failed completely, they could first hear squealing or rattling noises and smell burning oil odor, then the engine may run roughly, misfire even cause a no start condition. Leaking oil is also a big problem, it is also part of the reason of poor fuel efficiency. So, once the Check Engine Light in your vehicle comes on, and slow acceleration comes along, please make sure if the air filter, valve cover gasket, timing cover gasket, timing belt tensioner and oxygen sensors are in right order.
Second, suspension failure. This issue normally will not cause drivability but comprise driving experience. Ford drivers mainly met this issue showing as all kinds of annoying noises such as clunk, rattle, or scrape from underneath the vehicle, which actually worried them a lot while driving and would cause uneven tire wear. Other symptoms include intense car vibration, unintentionally steering and poor handling. Once similar signs appear on your Ford Explorer Sport Trac, inspecting the drive shaft, steering knuckle and wheel bearing is a wise choice.
Keeping your Ford Explorer Sport Trac in prime condition is a touch task. First of all, routine maintenance is indispensable. Knowing what to maintain is the crucial step. Electrical parts such as instrument cluster and speedometer are subject to wear due to a high frequency of usage, thus routine maintenance on them are needed.
