About Mercury Cougar

Being applied to several types of a car during its lifetime, the Mercury Cougar was built by the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company and sold under its entry-level premium brand Mercury between 1967 and 1997, after two-year hiatus, from 1999 to 2002 as a pony car, personal luxury car, mid-size car and compact sports car. Originally introduced to compete against the Mini Cooper S, Acura RSX and Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Cougar was closely related to the second-generation Ford Mustang. It did well in racing as well but after being manufactured through eight generations, the last Mercury Cougar rolled off the assembly line on August 9, 2002.
The seventh-generation model was produced from 1989 to 1997 based on the Ford MN12 platform. Featuring a completely new body and chassis, the Cougar shared a fully independent rear suspension with the Ford Thunderbird. Available in base LS and XR-7 trim levels, the Mercury Cougar was powered by a 3.8 L V6 rated at 140 hp, a 5.0 L V8 producing 200 horsepower and a 4.6 L V8 making 205 hp and these engines sent power through 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmissions. The more recent Cougar was seen as the replacement for the Ford Probe and debuted at the 1998 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 1999 model. Being offered in only one body style, 3-door liftback coupe, the Mercury Cougar was powered by either a 2.0 L I4 or a 2.5 L V6 mated to the 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions.

Mercury Cougar Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

As a big, personal luxury coupe, the Mercury Cougar is fond of many car enthusiasts of a younger vintage. But as the accumulation of mileage, you still need to be prepared for these common problems:
First, engine failure is often the first and most common problem reported. It is not surprising as the newest Cougar must be at least fifteen years old, engine issue will be a normal problem. The best suggestion for you is to diagnose and solve it as soon as you can according to these recognizable and simple symptoms. First of all, this problem often starts with strange sounds such as whining, squealing, and rattling from the engine; then engine performs worse so that misfiring, stalling and even hard starting. Before the engine fails completely, you need to notice if the vehicle loses power while acceleration and consumes excessive oil. Once the Check Engine Light is activated, you need to inspect the spark plug, air filter, oil filter, engine mount, fuel pump, serpentine belt and timing belt tensioner.
Second, transmission failure is another headache for Mercury Cougar drivers, especially for those who have no knowledge background about working principle of automobiles. In fact, this issue could also be serious enough to lead to drivability problem, you have to attach enough importance to it. According to experienced owners, strange sounds such as clunking and grinding noises from underneath the vehicle are signs to warn you of transmission failure. Other symptoms include difficulty shifting gears, leaking transmission fluids, indicator not matching the gear, the vehicle starts in another gear or refuses to go into any gear. All these could be attributed to the transfer case seal, transmission assembly, automatic transmission shifter, automatic transmission filter, shift cable and transmission gasket.
Always taking performing routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts on your Mercury Cougar as an effective way to lengthen your vehicle's lifespan. Some parts could not last as long as the vehicle could due to fragile materials and harsh working conditions. Therefore, please add seat belts, windshield wipers, wiper blades, fog lights, headlights, the antenna and the cabin air filter to the routine maintenance list since they are helpful in creating a safe and comfortable driving environment but are exposed to harsh conditions all the time.
