About Mercury Grand Marquis

Being a slightly fancier twin of the Ford Crown Victoria, the Mercury Grand Marquis was built by Mercury, which is a division of the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company that sells entry-level premium vehicles under the Mercury brand, between 1975 and 2011 as a full-size sedan. Originally introduced to replace the Mercury Marquis, the Grand Marquis was the premium model of the Marquis lineup and became an independent model until 1983. Being the flagship of the Mercury lineup, the Grand Marquis was manufactured for four generation before the last one rolled off the assembly line on January 4, 2011, due to the demise of Mercury brand in 2011.
The third-generation model was produced from 1998 to 2002 and received an update for the 1998 model year. It was offered in only one body style, 4-door sedan but it came in two trim levels: GS and LS. During this generation, the Mercury Grand Marquis was powered by a 4.6 L V8 rated at 215-235 horsepower and 265-304 pound-feet of torque, and this engine sent power through a 4-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. The most recent model arrived for the 2003 model year. And it came in several trim levels: base GS (split into LS Fleet and LS Retail), GS Convenience, LS Premium, LS Ultimate and LSE as well as Limited Edition, Palm Beach trim. The 4.6 L V8 engine was still available but it could produce 224-239 hp and 272-287 lb-ft of torque. And power was still sent through the 4-speed automatic transmission.

Mercury Grand Marquis Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Though offering roomy cabin, plush, quiet ride and tough construction, the Mercury Grand Marquis also has great handling. Therefore, in order to enjoy a pleasant ride in your Grand Marquis, you had better know about these common problems on it:
First, engine failure caused by cooling system ranks first among all other issues with the Mercury Grand Marquis and drivers complained that it arises when the vehicle reaches only 70,000 miles. You may know how vital the engine is to the vehicle but have no idea about the role of the cooling system. In simple words, your engine needs to stay at a proper operating temperature to give its performance to the fullest play and enjoy a longer lifespan. Therefore, if you find leaking coolant on the ground and feel the engine overheating for a long time, you need to be alert as the engine will perform worse than before. It may stall, misfire, suffer from starting issues, lose power while acceleration, consume excessive oil and activate the Check Engine Light and Low Coolant Light, thus, please always make sure the ignition coil, intake manifold, intake manifold gasket, thermostat housing, radiator cap, coolant reservoir and cooling hose are working properly always.
Second, issues on suspension, transmission and steering system not only lower the overall quality of the Mercury Grand Marquis but also results in potential dangers for occupants. The suspension failure not only brings uncomfortable and unsteady driving trip, the poor handling due to intense car vibration, tilting vehicle because of uneven tire wear, unintentional steering and loose steering wheel could get you in fatal accidents. Therefore, please inspect the shock absorber, sway bar link bushing, axle beam and sway bar bracket. As for transmission and steering issues, please pay more attention to the working condition of automatic transmission filter, transfer case seal, transmission pan, steering column cover and steering shaft.
To maintain your vehicle's overall quality, performing routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts is essential. The wheel cover, blower motor resistor, wiper arm, wiper pivot, washer pump, slip yoke, wheel seal, neutral safety switch, pinion washer, battery cable, washer reservoir and antenna need to be maintained routinely as they all play important roles in creating a safe and comfortable driving environment but they are also exposed to harsh working conditions.
