About Mercury Marquis

Though not being as famous as Mercury Grand Marquis, the Mercury Marquis was built by the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company and sold under its entry-level premium brand Mercury between 1967 and 1986 as full-size and mid-size cars. Originally introduced to replace the Mercury Montclair and Mercury Park Line, the Marquis was marketed as the Mercury counterpart of the upscale full-size Ford LTD. The Marquis in its name derived from French, meaning marquess in English. After being manufactured for four generations, the production of the Mercury Marquis was ended in 1986 and it was replaced by Mercury Grand Marquis and Mercury Sable ever since.
Since most modern people only own the most recent four-generation model, we will mainly focus on the 1983-1986 model. For the 1983 model year, it received an update and was offered in two body styles, 4-door sedan and 4-door station wagon. Built based on the Ford Fox platform, it came in only one trim level. During this generation, the Mercury Marquis was powered by a 2.3 L inline 4-cylinder engine, a 3.3 L inline 6-cylinder engine, a 3.8 L V6 and a 4.9 L V8; and these engines sent power through either a 3-speed or a 4-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels.

Mercury Marquis Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

No matter as a mid-size or as a full-size car, the Mercury Marquis is very suitable for family use. But taking its age into account, these common problems should be familiar:
First, engine failure and cooling failure often arise together and one often deteriorates another. According to some experienced drivers, engine failure often manifests as backfiring, misfiring, stalling, roughly-running engine and a reduction in power and fuel economy. And once the cooling system starts to leak coolant and the engine stays at a high operation temperature, the engine performance will decrease dramatically. Your vehicle may get in trouble in starting issues such as hard starting and inability to start, the vehicle may also hesitate when acceleration. Therefore, in order to prevent your vehicle from breaking down, please inspect the ignition coil, thermostat housing, radiator cap, spark plug, intake manifold gasket, head gasket, oil filter and air filter once both the Check Engine Light and Low Coolant Light come on.
Second, issues on suspension, transmission and steering systems are also troublesome for drivers. Both suspension and transmission failures could result in clunking and grinding noises from underneath the vehicle, but the difference lies on the suspension failure will bring about poor handling due to intense car vibration, unintentional steering and loose steering wheel and all these could result in a dangerous ride. You must make sure the shock absorber, sway bar link bushing, axle beam, and sway bar bracket are always in good order. While the automatic transmission filter, transfer case seal and transmission pan are the culprits of transmission slippage and surging as well as difficulty shifting gears. As for steering failure, you need to pay more attention to the steering column cover and steering shaft.
But in order to enjoy the driving pleasure brought by your Mercury Marquis, you need to make sure every part of it works properly and cooperate well. Some parts just could not last as long as the vehicle could due to fragile materials and harsh working conditions. For instance, the windshield wiper and wiper blade are often made of soft rubber, a kind of material that could only last for years, but they always work under the adverse weather to provide excellent driving visibility. You are supposed to replace them at least six to twelve months. Other parts including seat belt, fog light, headlight, antenna and cabin air filter are also helpful in creating safe and comfortable driving environment, you had better put them on your routine maintenance list as well.
