About Mercury Montego

As a nameplate that was applied to three distinct vehicles, the Mercury Montego was built by the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company and sold under its entry-level premium brand Mercury between 1968 and 1976 and from 2005 to 2007 as a compact vehicle. Originally introduced in the late 1960s as a replacement for the popular Mercury Comet and to compete with the rising tide of imports, the Montego also competed against the Chrysler Sebring, Cadillac CTS and Chrysler 300. But after being manufactured after three generations, the Montego was discontinued due to a poor critical reception and lower than expected sales.
Since the more recent Mercury Montego are more interesting among drivers, we will focus on the model produced from 2005 to 2007. As a model revived after a 29-year hiatus, the Montego was put into production on July 12, 2004, for the 2005 model year. Built based on the Ford D3 platform, it was offered in only one body style, 4-door sedan. The Montego came in three trim levels: Base, Luxury and Premier. During its whole life, it was powered by a 3.0 L V6 rated at 203 horsepower, and this engine sent power through either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission) to the front wheels or four wheels.

Mercury Montego Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Offering a roomy cabin and trunk, available all-wheel drive and an unusual elevated driving position for a better view, Mercury Montego is an appealing vehicle. But considering your Montego is at least ten years old, you had better be aware of these common problems with it:
First, engine failure is a headache since it is the culprit to destroy the vehicle. Every driver knows exactly that once the engine starts to fail, the vehicle is on the verge of breaking down. Thus, you have to know about these symptoms of this issue. According to experienced drivers, if you hear squealing or whining noises from the engine, it means your engine starts to fail. Next, you will notice a dramatic decrease in engine performance such as misfiring, stalling and hard starting, and the vehicle may lose power while acceleration and consume excessive oil. For drivers without any background of mechanics, once the Check Engine Light is triggered, you are supposed to inspect the serpentine belt, engine mount, spark plug, air filter, oil filter, body control module, fuel pump, and rod bearing immediately.
Second, suspension failure is also a troublesome problem. Unfortunately, most Montego drivers have no accurate understandings about this issue and underestimate the consequences it could bring, and they thought it could only bring about an uncomfortable and unsteady ride. But in fact, starting with the clunking or grinding noises from underneath the vehicle, the vehicle will have uneven and excessive tire wear, and you will find hard to control the vehicle due to intense case vibration, tilting vehicle, unintentional steering and shaky steering wheel. All these could result in a fatal accident. To prevent the worst result, please make sure the wheel bearing, shock absorber, sway bar bushing, control arm bushing, coil springs and coil spring insulator are always in good order.
Performing routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts on your Mercury Montego is believed to be an effective way to decrease the possibility of fatal accidents. Some auto parts are bound to wear and tear quickly due to fragile materials and harsh working conditions. Windshield wiper and wiper blade are often made of soft rubber but always work under adverse weather conditions to provide excellent driving visibility. Seat belts, fog lights, headlights, vehicle speed sensors, antennas and cabin air filters should be added to your routine maintenance list as well.
