About Mercury Sable

Being nearly identical to the prestigious Ford Taurus, the Mercury Sable was built by Mercury, which is a division of the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company that sells entry-level premium vehicles under the Mercury brand, between December 1985 and April 29, 2005 and from June 2007 to May 21, 2009 as a mid-size and full-size car. Originally introduced as the successor to Mercury Marquis, the Sable was reintroduced in 2008 to replace the Mercury Montego. Though as the counterpart to Taurus and being the third best-selling Mercury vehicle, the Sable was still replaced by Taurus after being manufactured for five generations.
The fourth-generation model was produced from 2000 to 2005 based on the Ford D186 platform. It shared all mechanical components with the Taurus with a unique body and was offered in two body styles, 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon. It came in trim levels including GS, GS Plus, LS, LS Premium and LS Platinum. During this generation, the Sable was powered by 3.0 L V6 and engine sent power through the 4-speed automatic transmission. The most recent model was offered from 2005 through 2009. Debuted as the Mercury Montego, it was renamed as the Sable for the 2008 model year. Base, Base AWD, Premier, and Premier AWD were available trim levels. Back then, it got power from a 3.5 L V6 rated at 263 horsepower and power was sent through a 6-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels or four wheels.

Mercury Sable Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Boasting top safety scores, plenty of space for passengers and cargo, a smooth ride and above-average fuel economy for the segment, the Mercury Sable can yet be regarded as a perfect option for a family car. However, there will also appear some common problems with the Sable as the accumulation of mileage:
First, according to some experienced drivers, the braking and suspension failures are the most serious and common issues they have ever met during driving. The significance of a well-functioning braking system is obvious, but on the Sable, you may notice the brakes become noisy and poorly responded as time passes by, the brake pedal may also become pulsating. If you are careful enough when checking, you will also find score marks on the rotors. For your safety, please make sure the brake disc, brake drum, brake pad set, brake caliper, brake dust shield and brake backing plate are working properly before hitting the road. As for suspension failure, you need to keep a close eye on the working condition of the sway bar bushing, control arm, wheel bearing, sway bar link and shock absorber.
Second, the transmission and engine failures are also troublesome to handle with. Both issues could lead to drivability problems and you need to attach enough importance to them. As for transmission failure, drivers mainly complained about the transmission slippage and surging or difficulty shifting gears. The shift cable, automatic transmission filter, automatic transmission shifter, transmission assembly and transfer case seal are often the culprits. As for engine failure, it starts with sounds such as whining or squealing from the engine, evolves in roughly running, misfiring, stalling and hard starting or no start. Before the vehicle breaks down completely, please keep the throttle cable, air fiter, oil filter, engine mount, side cover gasket, body control module and serpentine belt in proper condition.
To make sure 100% safe and comfortable driving trip, you need to make sure every part of your Mercury Sable performs at the best condition. But in fact, some parts are bound to wear and tear more quickly than others due to fragile materials and harsh working conditions. Thus, you are advised to put the hood latch, fuel pressure sensor, windshield wipers, vehicle speed sensor, A/C switch, wiper blades, fog lights and headlights on your routine maintenance list.
