About Mercury Tracer

Initially as a modified version of the Asia-Pacific market Ford Laser, Mercury Tracer was built by the Japanese multinational automaker Mazda Motor Corporation between 1987 and 1989 and by the great American multinational automaker Ford Motor Company and sold under its entry-level premium brand Mercury from 1990 to 1999. Originally introduced to take the place of Mercury Lynx, Tracer was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Escort in North America competing against the Dodge Neon, Daewoo Nubira and Toyota Corolla. But after being manufactured for three generations, Tracer was discontinued in 1999 and the last Tracer rolled off the assembly line on July 2, 1999, and finally was replaced by Ford Focus though it was named to Car and Driver Magazine's Ten Best List for 1991.
The second-generation Mercury Tracer was produced from 1990 to 1996 and went on sale in early 1990 as a 1991 model. It was offered in two body styles, 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon. Built based on the Mazda B platform, Tracer came in three trim levels: GS (Base), LS, and LTS. During this generation, Mercury Tracer was powered by either a 1.9 L I4 rated at 88 hp and 108 lb-ft of torque or a 1.8 L I4 producing 127 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque and engines sent power through the 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions. The more recent Tracer was updated in 1996 for the 1997 model year. It was available GS, LS and Trio appearance package but only got one engine option, a 2.0 L I4 cranking out 110 hp and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission options were carried over.

In case you also meet this issue during your driving, please make sure the Tracer wheel bearing, shock absorber, sway bar bushing, control arm bushing, coil springs and sway bar link are always in right order.
Second, transmission failure and car won't start are what Mercury Tracer drivers feel troublesome while driving as well. In fact, many Tracer drivers may not understand that why transmission failure appears along with starting issues, but transmission failure is often the culprit of drivability issue. Therefore, this, in essence, is the only transmission issue. Once finding leaking transmission fluids, feeling difficulty in shifting gears, indicator not matching the gear, vehicle starting at another gear or refusing to go into gear, please inspect if the Tracer transmission pan, automatic transmission filter, automatic transmission shifter, transmission assembly, transfer case seal and shift cable are working properly.
